David Caldwell, formerly Takeuchi‘s national product manager, has transitioned to become the manufacturer’s new Southeast regional product manager.

In his new role, Caldwell will be responsible for all dealer and national rental account support activity within a multi-state area spanning Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi. Caldwell will support dealer sales teams and their customers to demonstrate, promote, and support the Takeuchi compact equipment product line. He will also work cross-functionally to complete new product roadmaps. He will also discover new opportunities within the construction equipment market segment throughout the Southeast.

“David has been a driving force behind the success of our products here in the United States for more than a decade,” said John Vranches, division sales manager for Takeuchi-US. “He knows our machines inside and out. He’s a consummate professional who can speak to what makes Takeuchi equipment unique in this industry. I can’t think of a better person to take on the challenges of our Southeast regional product manager role, and I know our customers in that area will benefit from David’s high level of expertise.”

Caldwell has been with Takeuchi-US since August 2010. He started his career as the company’s product and training manager specializing in compact excavators. Caldwell has served as the company’s national product manager since 2021. He will remain in that position until his transition to Southeast regional product manager. His experience in the compact equipment industry spans back more than two decades. His roles ranged from marketing analyst to product specialist to product manager.

“I’m excited to move into this new chapter of my career with Takeuchi,” said Caldwell. “While I’ve enjoyed my work at our U.S. headquarters in Pendergrass, GA, I’m looking forward to having more opportunities to interface with our dealers and their customers out in the field. Working with them and finding out how Takeuchi can serve them better has always been my passion, and that will be an integral part of this new role.”

Spartan Mowers recently revealed upgrades to all 2024 models and the addition of three brand-new units. The Shield, Defender, and RZ-HD Blackout are new for 2024.

“For the last year, we’ve been focused on bringing new models to market that better suit the wants and needs of our customers,” said John Swanson, general manager at Intimidator Group. “We’re excited to release three new machines that will do just that by expanding our lineup with two entry-level mowers and a new take on one of our bestsellers.”

Spartan Mowers RZ-HD Blackout

Scheduled for release later in the Spring, the Shield and Defender models are designed with value, performance, and comfort in mind. The Shield offers 48″ and 54″ decks with a 23 HP Kawasaki engine, and 20″ Carlisle Turf Armor rear tires. The Defender is the entry-level model for Spartan’s signature seven-gauge steel decks. It offers three cutting widths of 48″, 54″, and 60″and three engine options. Its power ranges from 22 to 24 horses.

Also new to the lineup is the RZ-HD Blackout, a combination of the popular RZ-HD and the stealthy KGZ-XD Blackout. This model is covered with black powder coating and features a new decal package. Also included are a custom blackout suspension seat, and blacked out 24×12 rear radial tires. The mid-level machine is available in a 54″ or 61″ deck with a 23 HP Kawasaki engine.

Along with the lineup additions, Spartan has added several upgrades to existing models for increased durability and performance. All 2024 RZ, RT, SRT, and KGZ-XD models now feature magnetic pin height adjustments, upgraded spindles, and redesigned pulley covers. Replacing the rotary height-of-cut system with the magnetic pin height adjustment and improving the correlation between the blade height and pin system settings ensure a consistent cut.

The complete 2024 Spartan Mowers lineup includes the Shield, Defender, RZ-Pro, RZ-HD, RZHD Blackout, RT-Pro, RT-HD, SRT-XDe, SRT-XD, and the KGZ-XD. Mowers are only sold through independent dealers within Spartan’s authorized network. In addition to standard features on some models, accessories and upgrades are also available for increased comfort, functionality, and style.

Chip Gaines Is New Brand Ambassador

Chip Gaines, Magnolia co-founder, co-host of the hit show “Fixer Upper,” and home renovation expert, has been announced as Bobcat Company’s new brand ambassador. Gaines is a long-time Bobcat customer and fan and is excited to showcase his love for the Bobcat brand to his audience.

“I’ve been using Bobcat equipment for years on my farm in Waco, and I can’t imagine working without it. Bobcat Awards Five $50,000 Grants For Five Park Projects

In other Bobcat news, the company recently awarded five grants, each worth $50,000, to support five park improvement projects in communities throughout the country. The grants are part of a 2023 partnership with National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to create vibrant and sustainable community park and recreation areas.

The five parks that received grant dollars have completed their projects affording their communities healthier green spaces, more walkable parks and greater climate readiness. The grant recipients include:

Project at the City of Stonecrest.

City of Stonecrest, GA: The City of Stonecrest, located east of Atlanta, used the grant dollars to develop a walking trail at Everett Park. The new 1.5-mile trail meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and opens up the dense forest to allow park enthusiasts to access an overlook by the South River. Bobcat of Atlanta supported use of Bobcat equipment and volunteer aid.
Davidson County Parks and Recreation in Lexington, NC: Grant dollars supported a pollinator garden and bog garden at newly created Yadkin River Park. The gardens are designed to protect the surrounding community from water pollution and flooding. Local Bobcat dealership R. S. Braswell Co. supported the project through volunteer aid and Bobcat equipment.
City of Buffalo, NY: The City of Buffalo Parks and Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust partnered on a 22-acre conservation easement known as Houghton Park. The grant helped transform a dumping ground of large broken concrete slabs, bricks and stones, into an open nature conservation area in a dense urban neighborhood overlooking the Buffalo River. Bobcat of Buffalo helped support the teams locally by assisting with the removal of heavy debris on site.
San Antonio River Authority, TX: The San Antonio River Authority developed new trails, created two bioswales and planted more than 800 native plants and grasses at its 351-acre Trueheart Ranch Park, which fronts the River. Bobcat of San Antonio brought loaders, excavators, and utility vehicles to help with site work.
City of Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation, WA: The City of Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation created a more inclusive environment for the community by creating new ADA-compliant gravel pathways at Auburndale Park. Bobcat of Seattle provided volunteer aid and Bobcat equipment.

Ayanna Williams, NRPA director of community and environmental resilience, commented, “Everyone deserves a healthy, more resilient community, and we are thankful for Bobcat’s support to help build more equitable futures for generations to come.” Bobcat and NRPA will continue to partner in 2024.

In the third installment of this month’s Bobcat news, the company has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s 2024 Most Innovative Companies. This year’s program showcases 58 industry categories—with manufacturing, health, climate, energy and AI among its popular categories. A panel of Fast Company editors and writers identified the companies driving progress around the world and across industries, evaluating thousands of submissions through a competitive application process.

Ruppert Landscape, leading provider of commercial landscape services, has been making some big employment and expansion moves in the Green Industry.

Ruppert Landscape has expanded its landscape construction operations to include a permanent location in Charlotte, NC. This branch joins 10 existing construction locations serving the State College (PA), Baltimore (MD), Washington (DC), Manassas (VA), Raleigh (NC), Charleston (SC), Atlanta (GA), Jacksonville (FL), Nashville (TN), and Houston (TX) markets.

Ruppert has been providing full-scope landscape construction services in Charlotte from the Raleigh branch since 2009. The Industry giant established a Charlotte satellite operation in 2020 to more effectively take on large-scale projects in the market. At the time, the full-time staff consisted of 16 employees. Four years later, the team has established a permanent presence and has grown to a team of 36. In converting from a satellite operation to a full-fledged branch, Ruppert intends to put down roots and continue building ties to the Charlotte market.

Ruppert’s Charlotte construction branch provides comprehensive commercial landscape construction services, including estimating and pre-construction services; installation of landscape, hardscape, and special decorative structures; irrigation and water management; and turnkey project management. Ruppert is currently working on several projects in the region, including the Eli Lilly manufacturing facility, Radius Dilworth, and Modera LoSo, with upcoming projects including The Pearl, Hanover South End, and Ascent South End.

This location is led by Chris Southworth, who has recently been promoted to Branch Manager. In this position, his responsibilities include planning, budgeting, personnel development, and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Southworth holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Eastern Kentucky University and has over 20 years of construction industry experience. He joined Ruppert in 2011 and served four years as Senior Estimator in the North Carolina construction branch before relocating to the Texas construction branch to serve as a Business Developer. In 2021, he returned to North Carolina and was promoted to Assistant Branch Manager to help oversee the Charlotte satellite operation.

Ruppert Landscape’s Mableton, GA landscape management branch has also recently welcomed Kevin Paepke as branch manager. In this role, he will be responsible for the overall welfare of the branch. That includes the safety and development of his team, strategic planning and budgeting, training, customer service, and day-to-day operations.

Paepke holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture from West Virginia University. He brings over 16 years of landscape industry experience, including several years at Ruppert earlier in his career. He first joined the Ruppert team in 2008 as an intern in the Gainesville, VA branch and then came on board full-time as a Field Manager for a few years before relocating to Dallas, TX. Over the last decade, Paepke played a crucial role in establishing and expanding a thriving Dallas landscaping firm. Under his leadership, the firm grew to encompass 60 employees and achieved $8 million in revenue. They offered comprehensive services in landscape maintenance, design, and construction.

Kress Commercial has announced that Nick Jiannas has been hired as VP of Kress Dealer Sales and Operations. Jiannas joins Kress after a 26-year career with Stihl where he served as VP of Sales and Marketing. Most recently, Jiannas led the end-user engagement arm of Stanley Black & Decker‘s outdoor-independent retail channel.

As landscapers and arborists, Turf readers know better than many just how sad it is—for our clients and for ourselves—when a beloved tree just can’t be saved. Such is the cycle-of-life story of “Stumpy,” a scraggly, yet resilient little cherry tree that won the hearts of many after a picture was shared of it valiantly clinging to the soil despite continual flooding of the National Mall Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial. Akin to the charm of the Peanuts comic Christmas tree, Stumpy became famous during the pandemic for its against-the-odds tenacity and miraculous blooming every Spring. The flooding, which occurs every day now at high tide, has been caused by rising sea levels in the Tidal Basin at West Potomac Park.

Stumpy became so beloved, the organizers of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile & 5K run, part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, declared 2024 “Year of Stumpy” in late February. “Runners face challenges each year, through training and life, but still continue to adapt and accomplish goals year after year,” said Event Director Phil Stewart. “Like them, Stumpy faces adversity and still blooms beautifully despite obstacles out of its control.”

Yet less than two weeks ago, the National Park Service announced it will be undertaking a $113 million rehabilitation of the seawalls around the Tidal Basin that will unfortunately require the removal of 158 of the nearly 3,700 Japanese flowering cherry trees on the National Mall—including Stumpy. According to news outlets, the Park Service has determined that poor Stumpy—already in a “mortality spiral” with rotting bark—is not well enough to survive a re-planting once the work is done. However, parts of Stumpy’s genetic material will be used by the National Arboretum to create “clones,” some of which will be replanted at the basin.

“This is a National Mall icon, a Washington D.C. celebrity, social media sensation, you know, but also a symbol of hope and perseverance,” said Piper Zettel, horticulturist with the Arboretum, in an interview with News4 Washington. “So, we are really thrilled to be a part of this project.” The removed trees will also be used as mulch to protect surviving trees. When the project is completed, 455 trees (including 274 cherry trees) will be replanted in the area.

In the meantime, Stumpy is having a last hoorah as visitors flock to take selfies, leave messages, and honor its last flowering. Photographers at NPR caught beautiful moments of final visits to the little tree.

As for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile & 5K, declaring 2024 the “Year of Stumpy”  turned out to be prescient. Stewart stated, “This news makes 2024 the perfect year for us to celebrate Stumpy…  In true Stumpy fashion, his resiliency will be showcased once again as he will live on as the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile mascot.”

Overlooking the Manitou Islands on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan lies a home nestled into a stand of mature oak and beech. The home stands proud, yet blends into its surroundings perfectly. While the house itself possesses tons of character, there was very little outdoor living space and even less accessibility throughout the property. Creating an easily reachable entertaining space that provided circulation while complementing the natural surround was our focus for the design of this project.

Design & Preparation

Many different facets proved challenging in the design phase. For instance, the initial consultation occurred during record-high water levels for Lake Michigan. These high waters had formed a 6′ cliff that made access to the beach only possible with a ladder. Not only was this inconvenient, it was unsafe for the property owners, who enjoy spending time on the beach. Clearly, this issue needed to be resolved before more erosion took place along the shoreline.

The project required a joint permit with the Army Corp of Engineers and Michigan Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).

Creating functional outdoor spaces that connected seamlessly with each other was the next initiative. Separate paths of travel, including the stairs off the deck, a pathway from front to back, and the walkout basement all needed to connect, yet involved multiple grades. Coupled with multiple outdoor living spaces, creating walk- ways that were natural, yet provided efficient flow, was a challenge.

Much deliberation was taken to carefully select materials for the project that would match the house and create a cohesive setting. While certain materials were obvious choices for the beach location, others took more thought to ensure they weren’t “forced.” The primary goal was to create a space that friends and family could enjoy for years to come. All these factors led to a design that used simple materials to blend function with the surrounding Nature.

Once the design plan was in place, there was still work to be done before breaking ground. A joint permit with the Army Corp of Engineers and Michigan Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) was required and applied for. This permitting can often take the better part of a year to be approved, so planning and scheduling played a crucial role in making sure the project progressed efficiently.

Lake Michigan Life

Experiences are reminiscent of certain senses. Life on the lake is sand on your toes, boardwalks underfoot, the smell of evening fires, the colorful blaze of sunsets, and the feeling of fellowship. These foundational elements guided the landscape creation.

The focal point of the lakeside is a terrace composed of travertine, creating an area large enough for the whole family to enjoy, but with a coziness to it. A combination of large sandstone and limestone outcroppings surround the terrace offering a sense of enclosure and security, while providing a transition to the undulating dunes and tall trees. Some of the boulders tested the limits of the machines used in the construction!

While the terrace area with its firepit overlooking the lake is the highlight of the outdoor living space, it’s complemented by curving walkways, stairs, and knee walls allowing the flow and accessibility desired in the design stage.

The home has a walkout basement and one of the client’s requests was to incorporate an outdoor shower and foot wash to minimize the sand being tracked into the home. The shower is now conveniently located underneath the deck, just outside the walkout door, and is outfitted with a bench, hot and cold water, and a privacy door. Cedar planking covers the shower exterior, matching the house siding and giving the impression that it was part of the original plans.

A small, secluded patio is also located under the deck. This quaint area accommodates a couple chairs and offers a cool respite of shade. The patio then slowly tapers down to a small boardwalk of reclaimed wood that leads to the beach. A natural limestone staircase from the terrace also spills into the same boardwalk offering travel toward the beach or house. Not only does the boardwalk offer flexibility to easily move as necessary, but it also sweeps and curves through the dunegrass providing a classic beach vibe. A second set of stairs located behind the shower allows access to the terrace and the front of the house. The staircase starts up the grade and then splits halfway up forming two paths for easy travel.

Plantings

Along the stairs are lovely plantings of sedum, geranium, and coral bell. A drip edge disguised as a dry creek bed flows in and out of plantings to collect and divert any water coming off the roof. This “sunken garden” is a hidden gem on the property and a place where you feel immediately relaxed by the soft textures and pleasant blooms.

The plant palette was limited in order to match the surrounding dunes. Dunegrass, sand cherry, junipers, and cedars were used to achieve a natural effect. An expanse of dunegrass quilts the carefully created dunes, while drifts of sand cherry and juniper occupy the property fringes. Several cedars were carefully placed to ensure privacy and offer understory in otherwise mature hardwoods.

While dunegrass plantings helped minimize windblown sand, the wave erosion required a more complex solution. To fortify the shoreline, 125 tons of large boulders were placed to armor against wave action. Some individual boulders weighed in at nearly five tons, providing protection from Lake Michigan’s most powerful storms.

Such large boulders created complex logistics. There was nowhere onsite to store the amount of boulders needed so it meant many small trips with a skid steer from a small access road down to the beach to get all boulders in place. Per the permit, heavy filter fabric was placed in the cut, followed by boulders placed at a 3:1 slope to ensure any ice push would ride over the boulders and not push them upland.

As the project progressed, the water levels of Lake Michigan dropped over 2′ back to their previous norm. The dropping levels, combined with heavy wave action, deposited tons of sand on the shoreline and added nearly 100′ of beach! At present, the tops of the boulders are the only hint that this shoreline protection exists below what is now nearly 6’ of sand. Though the boulders are currently mostly unseen, the owners now have peace of mind if water levels rise again.

Curving walkways, stairs, and kneewalls allow an organic flow and easy accessibility between the different grades of home, terrace, and beach.

The Details

When chosen correctly, the simplest components often yield the grandest results. This philosophy only works if the details are executed perfectly. While the bones of the design were strong, the details are what created a seamless landscape.

Creating A Five-Star Landscape Design Build Experience

Tasked with ensuring the steps from the terrace to the boardwalk had a handrail for ease of access for all ages, we struggled to find a solution that didn’t look out of place. One day after a large storm, we came across a piece of driftwood. Upon examination it was the perfect length and shape to be used as a handrail! With a little ingenuity, we attached this piece to another post and fashioned a unique, one-of-a-kind handrail that Nature deposited into our laps.

One of the family’s favorite activities on the lake is collecting the famed Petoskey stone, a rock composed of fossilized coral that is unique to the area. These stones have a unique pattern and are always a topic of conversation. We wanted to honor the fondness for this local gem by including them in the landscape somewhere. We settled on using these stones as a border around the tiles in the outdoor shower. While we may have depleted their collection, the family enjoys this small detail that is now a fixture of their home.

The shores of Lake Michigan are a mesmerizing place. Time seems to slow down, and cares seem to get lost in the wind. This landscape now honors the emotions this lake setting evokes with lazy, meandering paths, a sandy boardwalk, and cozy gathering places for friends and family alike.

Mecalac has announced the return of its popular Mecalac North America Roadshow. The second annual event is slated for nine locations starting March 26th in Miami, FL. It will conclude on April 17th in West Babylon, NY.
